Summary of Invitation, Context & Objectives:Ā
Shauna Grinke, VP - People & Organizational Effectiveness of the VGH & UBC Foundation has invited Jonathan and Pinnacle Pursuits team to work with 80-100 fundraising staff people to bring people together to experience a sense of āinterconnectednessā and āweāre all in this togetherā.
To support both an inspirational and relevant training and development retreat day, the agenda will include a 2+hour facilitated morning session (theme of āinter-connectedness) followed by lunch and then an afternoon consisting of mini-lectures and tours of key clinical and research areas at UBC for fundraising efforts will be focussed (theme of āwhat is it we are actually fundingā) (Tours will include Sport Cariology, Blood Biomarker Lab; MS Lab; radiology, etc).
Overall Context:
As Vancouver Coastal Healthās primary philanthropic partner, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation is improving lives in our community. After 40 years of traditional fundraising methods, the VGH & UBC Foundation team is going through a huge change in strategy. The generational shift in wealth is huge, which will impact the next 10 years and going forward. In the past 80% of fundraising has come from major donors ($100K+) based on specific, project-based donor campaigns.
What does this mean for the VGH & UBC Foundation?
With the idea that āWhat got us here, wonāt get us thereā, an innovative and fresh approach with a new trajectory is called for! As a result, from what was a multiple campaign model, the team has now created a āComprehensive Campaignā which will take place over an eight year journey; where everything comes together to support a single āgoalā (which is both financial and purpose-based ā to transform health care for British Columbians).Ā
The idea or theme of interconnectedness is key where everyone feels they are working together to be āone team, one dreamā.
Past Sessions: Last year a similar offset event was organized by the social committee and the group engaged in a workshop that included some communication exercises and role-playing games. This year, the department is looking for an externally organized, professionally facilitated interactive experience / active-learning workshop based on thematic, custom objectives to connect, inspire, and engage people.
Key Objectives/Deliverables:
As discussed on our initial phone call, some of the goals we aim to achieve through this training and development retreat day include:
- Overall, have a 2+hr morning session focussed on the theme of āInterconnectednessā (while the Afternoon session is a tour with a focus on āwhat is it we are actually fundingā)
- Create a series of custom/thematic interactive experiential activities that would follow an experience arc / story (ie. āWhat, So What, Now Whatā) where participants become inspired and truly embody the learning through an experiential process / learning journey.
- Possibly somehow using the idea / mantra of āEvolutionā (vs. āRevolutionā)

Team Spirit Challenge
An event where the whole group is together in the same area, and teams compete in series of unique high-energy, amazing ‘Survivor-like’ group challenges that require problem-solving, trust-building and creative teamwork solutions! With a fun, strength-based approach, this is a great event for including diverse needs and abilities. Always makes for awesome photos and memories!
Adventure-Play-Wellness Day
Ā The best mix ofĀ of various adventure-based and wellness experiences options from which participants can choose (ie.Ā lantern making, candle-making, personal leadership/goal-setting, clay-work, circle drumming,Ā canoeing, raft-building, archery, low ropes and high ropes, rock climbing & more) that will help get people out of the city and make any experience refreshing, interactive and fun! Located at one of our partner 'Adventure-Centres'.
Orienteering Challenge
In teams, participants learn to use traditional orienteering methods along with a ‘landmark legend’ and a set of guidelines, to navigate through their environment towards a variety of creative check point stations (mystery team challenges). The initiatives and will require teams to plan, strategize, communicate effectively, and regularly re-evaluate their decisions!
Amazing Adventure Race
Be ready for a high-impact adventure-based āscavenger hunt-styleā experience! Teams are given a map, legend, course and clues and compete in a unique team adventure challenge, racing through the local trails and beautiful wilderness setting whilst finding and completing strategically hidden and customized checkpoint challenges and team building initiatives.
Amazing Adventure Race: Remote Radio Course
Each team will be split in two & given 2 radios along with maps and clues. The challenge will require teams to strategize carefully, make key decisions, adapt as needed, and communicate via radio in order to complete all creative challenges, checkpoints, and problem-solving tasks successfully.Ā This is an intense experience that mirrors working as a remote team!
Adventure Play at Loon Lake, Maple Ridge
Ā A series of various adventure-based experiences and options from which participants can choose (ie. canoeing, raft-building, archery, low ropes and high ropes, rock climbing) that will help get people out of the board room and make any meeting or conference refreshing, interactive and fun! Located at one of our partner 'Adventure-Centre': Loon Lake Lodge & Retreat Centre, Maple Ridge.
Corporate Picnic Adventure Day
Includes many activity options. Imagine a super fun, interactive, company-wide experience where everyone has the time and space to relax, connect, recharge, play together as colleagues and/or as families, and at the same time accomplish something uniquely different, where company values are promoted and celebrated, and new friendships and memories are created!
Paddle & Play Day
Paddle & Play is a unique land & water team-building event that combines your choice of one or several of our land-based activities with either traditional Voyageur Canoes or Dragon Boating. Teams will divide and take turns being on land and on water. They will compete in a series of challenges where teamwork, strategy, problem solving, collaboration, and a sense of fun are key to team and organizational success.
Dragon Boating Adventure
Paddling either 10 or 20-person canoes, and led by a professional team of dragon boat instructors, your group will benefit from the expertise of trained facilitators to help guide them through the basics of dragon boat paddling skills and learn to work together to paddle safely, paddle fast, and have tons of fun!
Virtual Team Building
During our Virtual Programs, each participant will use their skills and creativity in a way that may have taken a back seat in today’s remote work-life. In addition, we debrief each event, so that all participants can learn how to relate and apply the experience to their everyday life and business environment. The overall benefit for you? You will see how your team can continue to grow and connect, even when physically apart.
